research for music video
For this music video, my group and I have decided to go through various different playlists to find songs at least two of us were familiar with. When we eventually found one, the remaining group member who wasn't familiar with it listened to the song (while looking at the lyrics) in order to get a better understanding of the meaning of the song. The song that was chosen is Freaks by Jordan Clarke, a pop song.
During our research we realized that the song did not have a music video, so my group decided to get the information needed through other music videos that had the same feeling/same message. Since Freaks is a sad pop song, my group searched up other sad songs and found the following:
- They use dark color schemes to represent gloomy and depressing feelings.
- Usually shot at night/in dark places since it gives a darker mood. Daylight is usually used to represent happy and lighter moods.
- Use some sort of props (such as masks and clothes) that look unusual to stand out amongst the crowd/crowds.
- Some videos had flashing lights to signify chaos.
- Symbolism on how everyone is different and to not be afraid to be yourself.
Conventions and Codes:
- To provide a deep meaning, sad music videos tend to use dark settings and/or dark settings to signify certain moods.
- Flashbacks are common within sad music videos and are usually done using a light that is white-ish. Flashbacks are also inserted between a scene, utilizing a cutaway shot.
- These music videos also use props that correlate with a specific lyric/word (Ex: Showing a flame when the song/lyric has the word 'shine' in it.)
